Animales en Extinción/Endangered animals
Venezuela uno de los países con mayor diversidad biológica, hoy es lamentable el aumento de la cifra de animales en extinción, debido a la intervención del hombre. Hasta 1974 se habían extinguido 68 especies de mamíferos, 130 especies de aves y 28 especies de reptiles. Más de trescientas especies animales y un número indeterminado de especies vegetales corren el riesgo de extinción definitiva, uno de esos animales es la Tortuga Verde que estaremos investigando a continuación.

Descripción:
Reptil del orden de los quelonios. Las tortugas tienen la particularidad de portar un caparazón que los protege y dispensar de dientes para alimentarse; en cambio, poseen un pico con puntas bien afiladas para morder la comida. Su coloración es generalmente verde, por ello su nombre. Un adulto puede llegar a medir 110cm. de largo y 89cm. de ancho y puede superar los 300 Kg. de peso. Tiene una cabeza ancha y robusta y el carapacho está cubierto por placas córneas lisas, que no se sobreponen unas a otras. Se caracteriza por poseer cuatro pares de placas laterales. Las patas están modificadas en aletas, debido a sus costumbres marítimas.

Distribución:
Es la tortuga más abundante del Mar Caribe. En Venezuela puede encontrarse en el Archipiélago de las Aves, en los Roques. La mayor concentración se encuentra en Isla de Aves, donde cerca de 500 hembras desovan todos los años, siendo después de Tortuguero, la segunda colonia reproductiva más grande en el Mar Caribe.
La Tortuga verde también se encuentra en aguas cálidas tropicales y subtropicales. Las hembras de tortuga verde solo van a las playas a depositar sus huevos en nidos tradicionales de arena, fuera de este hecho, la especie es totalmente marina.

Alimentación:
Durante el primer año de vida es omnívora, luego se vuelve herbívora, siendo las algas su principal fuente de alimento, ocasionalmente su dieta es complementada con medusas, moluscos y otros animales.

Reproducción:
Su madurez sexual es alcanzada entre los ocho y diez años de edad. Los meses de mayor actividad reproductiva son entre Julio y Octubre de cada año. Una hembra puede poner más de 1000 huevos al año.

Amenazas:
La especie ha sido utilizada como fuente de alimento para las poblaciones costeras. Sin embargo, la razón principal por la que sus poblaciones se han reducido tan drástica mente es la comercialización de su carne, huevos, cuero, aceite y otros productos derivados. Igualmente los desechos tóxicos derramados en bancos de algas afecta severamente a los tortuguillos que de ellas se alimentan.
